La Siguanaba

 The Legend

She was originally called Sihuehuet (beautiful woman), in the mythology had an affair with the son of the God “Tlaloc”, which became pregnant. But, she was a really bad mother, because she was leaving her son alone to meet with her lover. When Tlaloc found out what was happening, Sihuehuet was cursed with the name: “Sihuanaba” which means (ugly woman). She would be beautiful at first sight, but when men approach her, she would turn and become a horrible being with a scary ugly face.

The God condemned her to wander the countryside, with the purpose of appearing to the men that travels alone at night. The native people of the country say that the ghost appears at night in the rivers of the Salvador, usually washing clothes and always looking for his son called “Cipitío”, which was granted with eternal youth, by the God Tlaloc who had the purpose of to torture Sihuanaba.

According to the legend, all the people who spend the nights in the forests of the Salvador are most likely to find her. However, she follows the men in love, “The Don Juans who boast about their sexual adventures”.

To these, the Siguanaba appears to them in any tank water late at night, or on the banks of rivers according to other versions. To these, the Siguanaba appears to them in any tank of water, very late at night, or on the banks of the rivers according to other versions. She washes herself with gold water in a tree and brushes her beautiful black hair with a comb of the same metal, her beautiful body is revealed through her transparent nightgown.

Some traditions mention that the man who goes crazy for her appearance follows her in that moment the Siguanaba calls to her victims, and conduct them for an up ravine. Then, shows her face when they’ve earned it, a face pale of a dead, with eyes out of their sockets, both of them red as the blood, also her porcelain skin smooth and delicate becomes wrinkled and greenish, her nails grow and, the worst thing of all, definitely is the sound of her raucous laugh of horror which paralyzes to the listener.

To avoid losing the soul and the life in general, the man must bite a cross or a medal and pray to God. Another way to get rid of the negative influence of the Siguanaba, is to make a supreme effort and get approached as much as possible to her. Then, lie on the ground with the look in the sky, with the purpose of touch and pull with strength her hair.

Also, you can do one last thing, Pull of the leaf of a tree and while she pulls on you. In this way the Siguanaba will be scared because she will feel that someone pulls her hair. This is the most effective practice to get rid of this spirit, (it is like the antidote that counteracts the evil powers of this magical woman).

If you watch a woman in the rivers of the Salvador and you want to know if it´s or not, the Siguanaba, is shouting three times: “No te vas a ir María pata de gallina” which means: “You’re not going anywhere crabgrass Mary”; if it’s the Siguanaba, she will be scared and will throw herself in the ravine, if she was not, the people just will tell you that you’re crazy, but at least you spend the scare.

Take the necessary precautions otherwise; do not ask if you ever say that you were touch by Siguanaba.
