White people of Chalatenango

One of the virtues that characterize Chalateco people is their hospitality to the visitors who need help. And you can’t deny also that more than once we have heard that “en Chalate casi toda la gente es chelita y de ojos zarcos”.  Behind this lies a story that …

It happened that in the year 1790, when Central America was still under Spanish rule and was known as the Kingdom of Guatemala, Spain, several poor families migrated north of Honduras, where the Indian minister of King Charles IV decided to make a settlement. But then they realized that climate was not right for them, because they were sick. Some of these families returned to Spain, but others migrated to Chalatenango.

White people of Chalatenango

According to the book “El Salvador: History of their villages, towns, and cities” by Jorge Lardé and Larin, the geographer William Dawson stated that “Chalatenago was sent to indigenous people by white people in 1791 by Baron de Carondelet, the governor and General of the Kingdom of Guatemala.

It is believed that this area was occupied what is now Holy Name of Mary. By that time in this area had few inhabitants, so intermarried families and that’s how they grew Spanish blood in Chalatenango, whose main feature was being skinned.

However, until our time, many of these families “white” have emigrated to other parts outside of Chalatenango, but still, keep listening to say that “most people Chalate is chelita and blue-eyed.” The aforementioned story explains the abundance of white people, blonde, and ojizarca of some populations of Chalatenango.

These faces are also part of the magic routes…
